Classic Homemade Toffee Apples

Make your own homemade toffee apples with just 4 ingredients! Perfect for Halloween parties, Bonfire Night, or a fun fall treat. Crunchy, sticky, sweet, and so much better than store-bought.

Toffee Apple Recipe.

A Halloween and Bonfire Night classic, these homemade toffee apples are sweet, sticky, and far tastier than store-bought versions.

Best of all, they’re easy to make with just four ingredients. Once you try them, you’ll never want to buy them again!

Top Tips:

  • Getting the toffee right: If the coating is soft and chewy, it hasn’t reached the right temperature.

To test this, drop a small amount in a glass of cold water. If it is ready, a hard toffee will form, which is slightly stretchy but breaks when pressure is applied.

  • Use a large pan: The toffee bubbles and froths as it boils, so make sure your pan is large enough.

  • Easy cleanup: Remove excess toffee, then fill the pan with boiling water, a little washing-up liquid, and scrub. Repeat until the toffee dissolves.

  • Toffee not sticking? Many apples have a waxy coating that causes the toffee to slide off. Dunk the apples in boiling water for 30 seconds to remove the wax before coating.

Ingredients

  • 6 Eating Apples

  • 450g Demerara Sugar

  • 50g Unsalted Butter (plus a little extra for greasing)

  • 2 tsp Cider Vinegar

  • 1 tbsp Clear Honey

  • 150ml Cold Water

1. Wash and dry the apples.

2. Push an ice lolly stick firmly into the top of each one.

3. Grease a piece of parchment or greaseproof paper with some unsalted butter.

4. Fill a bowl with cold water. Keep this ready to test the toffee.

5. Heat the sugar, butter, vinegar, honey and 150ml of cold water in a pan. Keep stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved.

6. Boil for 10 minutes and test. When the toffee is ready, a little of the mixture will harden immediately when dropped into a bowl of cold water.

Keep boiling and testing until you’re happy with the toffee. Don't worry if it looks frothy; this is normal.

If using a thermometer, a hard crack should be between 146 - 155 degrees C.

7. Remove from the heat. Dip the apples into the toffee and coat.

Take care as it’s very hot.

8. Stand them on the greased parchment paper and leave to set and cool.
